Strange surroundings – Descriptive writing by Raveena

The hot, arid air burned into my soul as millions of needles pricked my delicate skin. Beads of sweat coursed down my neck as I turned towards the opened window overlooking the barren desert. My friend and I were on an ever-sought vacation to the Grand Canyon, yet we had to drive from New York to Arizona and I was enveloped in impatience throughout the journey. Walls of heat shrouded me as I gasped for air, yet my efforts were fruitless, swallowing nothing but fire. As my lungs collapsed, I looked out of the window and into the heart of the coming sun, taunting me from afar. Suddenly, my eyes gave out and sweat and tears engulfed them till they took their true form.

Suddenly, Jessica lost control of the steering wheel and the car crashed. I was awakened from a vehement cry as I gazed into the eyes of the vultures, of every discrepancy, with a shrill voice. Jessica’s blood was gushing like a river. I held her tightly and slowly managed to get out of the compact car. We were in a quandary. There was no human nor beast to be found, only the torrid earth and the squinting sun. I felt like a corpse. Trembling, my eyes flashed over the sun and I was standing in a perpetual desert. Jessica was parched and so was I, we tried to call for help but the only reply we received was our own voices echoing on each canyon. The monotony of this parched wilderness was difficult to explain. It was a crucible death, a bone-dry basin of vastness and death. The immensity of it burned into our brains. As far as the eye could see, everything was being roasted and sautéed with the same intensity. Just then, I thought I saw a humming bird flitting into a cactus, but it was probably another hallucination. My dehydrated liver was shutting down.

Several hours later, night collapsed out of the blue. The devil’s garden metamorphosed into an angel’s cool breath. I found Jessica staring towards the North, wondering why I poked her and she sprang like a petrified cat. She was staring at the angel of death; I slapped her face and she returned to herself but there was nothing at all we could do except die in a desert. With the cool breeze we snuggled and slept like two cubs and the next morning Jessica felt a bit better. All of a sudden we heard a rattling noise and spotted an army-forced helicopter, we shouted with elan, and the next minute we found ourselves in a hollow hospital. We promised ourselves to never get distracted while driving again.
