The Accused – Narrative Writing by Raveena

Darkness came like the thick velvet curtains of the theatre. It was as if daytime had been one part of a play and the rest was to come after this intermission of night. There was something disturbing about this concrete box I was in. I heard screams from other cells and they paralyzed me from even pushing the gate. Upon the walls written in stone were the words “Vengeance” and “Anger”. That’s when I started reminiscing about my past.

Reminiscing about my past, their past, and her past made my blood flow backward with chills. It felt like yesterday but being stuck in this jail for 5 years never did I ever feel sorry for them after what they did to me. It was a bizarre day when my friends and I decided to explore the caves. Joanne screamed, “Come on James don’t be a cat on hot bricks!” I never felt so insulted but the darkness was creeping into my head. We rushed in and my heart was fluttering like a butterfly. “Can we go out now? There’s nothing to see here…” That’s when it happened to the excitement Joanne was skipping and she tripped on a jagged rock and fell into a water hole. Everybody stayed in awe, Jim dived into the water hole but when the body was found it was too late.

The skin was icy cold and ghoulish white; we didn’t know what we were up against, suddenly all my friends betrayed me and scamped away. The people who were garrulous weren’t staunch at all to her or me. I stayed near her for hours mourning her death and finally several hours later I heard the siren’s from a distance and within seconds the cops hovered above me with guns pointing and that’s when I had officially become the murderer for the death of Joanne Jimsely. I was timid and vexed simultaneously, I explained the situation to the police but when the evidence was inspected her body had my fingerprints at the last moment. I lost the case and when I tried to say, “Your honor-” I was interrupted and the case was closed. The day felt so vague but surprisingly sharp and the thought of having such friends wanted me to pulverize them. However, I wasn’t the scary cat anymore and I was looking forward to seeking revenge as within a week my sentence is completed and the thought, “ I will see that justice is done” repeated in my mind.
